NFWD Expands Mobile Wheelchair Support Initiative to Puttalam District | 24 June 2026
Following the successful Mobile Wheelchair Repair and Support Camp held in Kolonnawa, Colombo District, the Nation Forum of Women with Disabilities (NFWD) continued the initiative in Puttalam District, expanding access to essential wheelchair support services for persons with disabilities.
The camp provided wheelchair users and their families with repair, maintenance, and assessment services to help ensure that assistive devices remain safe, functional, and suited to individual needs. Participants also received practical guidance on wheelchair use, positioning, and routine maintenance to support greater mobility and independent living.
During the program, each wheelchair underwent a technical assessment to identify repair requirements and maintenance needs. Repair and adjustment services were provided where necessary, and participants received maintenance records to support future follow-up and servicing.
Services provided during the camp included:
• Wheelchair and assistive device repair and maintenance;
• Individual assessments of wheelchair condition and user needs;
• Practical guidance on wheelchair use and maintenance;
• Information and referrals related to health, well-being, and community support services.
A valuable aspect of the camp was the contribution of NFWD members and peer supporters, who provided practical guidance and shared experiences to support wheelchair users. Their engagement encouraged participants to strengthen their mobility skills, increase confidence, and enhance independent living through proper use and maintenance of assistive devices.
Building on the success of both the Kolonnawa and Puttalam camps, NFWD plans to continue strengthening community-based wheelchair support services across Sri Lanka, including training selected persons with disabilities in wheelchair repair and maintenance to create sustainable local support networks.
