An Awareness Program on Sexual and Reproductive Health tailored specifically for women with disabilities.

We are delighted to share the success of the recent workshop organized by the Nation Forum of Women with Disabilities (NFWD) in the Puttalam district!

On February 26th, 2024, at the Puttalam District Secretariat conference hall, we hosted an Awareness Program on Sexual and Reproductive Health tailored specifically for women with disabilities.

The event was graced by the presence of esteemed individuals, including Mrs. Rasanjali Pathiragae, President of NFWD; Mr. Saman Sri Rathnayaka from the Sri Lanka Election Commission; and Mr. Lalith Wickramasinghe, President of the Puttalam District Disability Forum. Their support and participation made this initiative even more impactful.

Mrs. Rasanjali Pathirage conducted a session focusing on the rights of women with disabilities and the legal framework pertaining to persons with disabilities in Sri Lanka. Her session provided valuable insights into the legal protections and rights afforded to individuals with disabilities, particularly women, within the Sri Lankan context. This addition highlights the comprehensive nature of the workshop, addressing not only health-related topics but also legal and rights-based issues affecting women with disabilities.

Dr. Harischandra Yakandawala, a renowned health educator and former director of the Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka, led the workshop with expertise and compassion. With the assistance of Social Services Department’s senior sign language interpreter, Chammi Nishara Dias, the workshop was made accessible to participants with hearing difficulties.

Thanks to the generous funding from FreedomHouse, we were able to conduct this workshop, providing refreshments and stationaries to the participants. Additionally, we provided all participants with a “Dignity Kit,” essential for women’s health, provided by UNFPA via Sri Lanka FPA, which contributed to this endeavor, further enhancing the support for women’s well-being.

The workshop was a resounding success, with participants actively engaging in discussions and gaining invaluable insights into sexual health. The interactive Q&A session fostered a dynamic exchange of knowledge and experiences.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all attendees, sponsors, and collaborators for their contributions to this meaningful cause. Together, we are breaking barriers and promoting inclusive healthcare for women with disabilities.
